Veterans Services is sponsoring a Webinar Thursday, Jan. 28, from 1-2 p.m. in the Gallagher Center multi-purpose room. Please stop by to learn more about working with veterans in the classroom and on campus.

How can faculty and staff engage with veterans on campus in a way that preserves office and classroom control, while respecting the service and status of our veterans and military students? Americans appear to be appreciative of veterans’ military service, but there also appears to be a heightened concern among faculty and staff on campuses about some post-combat issues, such as post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, and various forms of anxiety and cepression. Many times ineffective responses to these situations may even be isolating our veterans. This unhealthy dynamic can be easily remedied through education and communication and this webinar will give the participant the basic skills necessary to be confident in working with veterans in and out of the classroom.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• How to acknowledge the military background and experiences of current and former military members.
• How to engage military and veterans in ways that do not offend, but more importantly in ways that help create a supportive environment on campus.
• Learning the role of faculty and staff in taking the initiative to invite veterans to self-identify, how this can be done effectively, and what these invitations should look like.
• Maximizing student veteran involvement in the classroom and in campus activities.

INSTRUCTOR:  David Vacchi served for 20 years in the US Army, including deployments for Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. He is the Chair of NASPA’s Veterans Knowledge Community and currently serves as the Associate Director of Veteran Student Services at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
