The Crucifix: Religious Image and Art Object – Tomorrow
The Castellani Art Museum presents a special Easter Week “Meet Me at the CAM” program. Please join us Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at 10 a.m. for “The Crucifix: Religious Image and Art Object.”
Guest speaker Dr. Mary Walsh Meany states, “The crucifix is a central Christian devotional image which reflects but also shapes what Christians believe about salvation. In the modern world, this religious image often appears in a secular context as an art object. We shall address two questions: First, what do different depictions of the crucifix tell us about Christian belief and piety? Second, how does this image function when it is removed from a religious context?”
Dr. Meany is a retired religious studies professor from Siena College. She received her Ph.D. from Fordham University where she studied church history. Her interest in the image of the crucifix began with her dissertation on The Image of Christ in Julian of Norwich. She is a member of a study-group, Women in the Franciscan Tradition, which meets annually at the International Congress of Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Admission is free for NU students, faculty and staff with ID card.
