Self-paced Online Single-subject (SOS) Workshop on Accessibility for Faculty and Staff

In Announcements, by , on July 19th, 2017

Thinking about content for your summer or fall courses? The Center for the Advancement of Scholarship, Teaching, and Learning and Instructional Support is pleased to announce the inaugural workshop in the Self-paced Online Single-subject (SOS) Workshop series—Accessibility. Learn how to create or locate accessible course materials at your own pace. Everyone who completes the workshop will receive an eCertificate.

The Accessibility SOS Workshop is designed to help you understand the importance and significance of Section 508 in the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, with changes made in 2017, and the Ontarians with Disabilities Act of 2001 and how these impact the development of documents and the selection of images and videos for your technology-enhanced face-to-face, blended, and online course. Section 508 provides the foundation for Accessibility in all forms of content placed in Learning Management Systems such as Canvas and on websites.

The intention of the Accessibility SOS Workshop is to increase awareness about accessibility requirements as outlined in Section 508 and the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, how these policies influence both document design and the development of online course elements in Canvas, and how the policies impact how you should make documents and content accessible to all with and without a disability. By the end of this workshop you will be able to describe some of the basic principles concerning web accessibility, as well as learning some best practices to use in Canvas or when setting up accessible documents. As always, this, and every, workshop is strictly voluntary. To sign up for the Accessibility SOS Workshop, please email Sierra at ssadare@niagara.edu. This workshop is available to all full- and part-time (adjunct) faculty and NU staff.
