Notice of annual fire inspection
Please be advised that beginning Jan. 27, 2015, the university’s 2105 New York State annual fire inspection will commence. Over the course of the next few weeks, a representative from the New York State’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Office of Fire Prevention, will tour every building. For the most part, every office, closet, mechanical room, attic, basement, etc. will be inspected. As for student dorm rooms only a random percentage of rooms will be visited.
In order to facilitate this inspection, we ask that you please be aware of some minor items which, if addressed, will reduce our violations. Such items are:
- Only surge protectors are permitted to extend a cord to the outlet, no inexpensive extension cords are permitted.
- Space heaters must be plugged directly into an outlet, they cannot be plugged into an extension cord, and they may not be near any combustible material
- 18” of clearance must be maintained from a sprinkler head
- Fire/smoke doors may not be propped open unless the hold open device is connected to the fire alarm system.
- Office doors must be closed when no one is in occupancy
- Non fire rated curtains and draperies are not permitted. Flame retardant are also not acceptable.
- Wall hangings/pictures may not cover more than 50 percent of the wall space
- Heating devices (radiators, electric baseboards etc.) may not have any items touching or in close proximity
- Exit signs must be illuminated
- Fire doors must latch closed
- Smoke detectors must be secured to the ceiling and not covered or blocked in any manner.
- Outlet and switch cover plates must be in place and not broken or cracked.
Please inspect your area. If any such items are in need of attention, please immediately place a work order. As always we are striving to reduce the number of violations.
Once the schedule is established you will be notified.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact Lori Caccamise, supervisor of mechanical contracted services at ext. 8402. Inspection must be completed by Feb. 13, 2015.
