The Office of Multicultural Affairs, NU Black Student Union, and Department of Political Science are proud to co-sponsor a performance and presentation by Bilal Sunni-Ali on Thursday, Sept. 14th, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of Lower Level Gallagher.

A former member of the Black Panther Party and self-proclaimed citizen of the Republic of New Afrika, Bilal was a co-defendant in the United States vs. Dr. Mutulu Shakur case, and was successfully represented by revolutionary attorney Orie Lumumba who argued that “the wrong people are on trial” and used the political nature of the proceedings and of the national climate to wage a successful defense.

Now an activist who resides in Belize, Bilal returns to the US every summer during Black August to raise awareness and money for political prisoner support.  As a world-renowned tenor saxophonist from Gil Scott-Heron’s Midnight Band, Bilal performed on Saturday Night Live, with Wynton Marsalis and Stevie Wonder, and around the world.  He uses music to teach youth and as therapy.  He will speak on experiences as a Black Panther in New York, conscious citizen of the Republic of New Afrika, member of the Imam Jamil Action Network, Prison Advocate, and more.
