Border Community SERVICE of Niagara University will host a free community preparedness conference on Saturday, June 6, 2015. The Empowering Volunteers Conference is designed to provide training opportunities and workshops detailing best practices in personal and community preparedness initiatives. The event is for community volunteers and leaders and volunteers in Niagara County, Erie County and the City of Buffalo.

The conference will begin at 9 a.m. in St. Vincent’s Hall on the Niagara University campus with a keynote presentation by members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). The JTTF is our nation’s front line on terrorism: small cells of highly trained, locally based, passionately committed investigators, analysts, linguists, SWAT experts, and other specialists from dozens of U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies working together to pool talents, skills, and knowledge to protect communities from terrorist attack.

The conference will have morning and afternoon breakout sessions in St. Vincent’s Hall on the following topics:

* Fire and Life Safety – Firefighter Albert Hornung of the Niagara Falls Fire Department

* Epidemiology – Mary Walawander, Erie County Department of Health/Epidemiology

* Lessons from Cuba: Preparing Citizens and Protecting Communities – Nicole Gerber,     Roswell Park Cancer Institute Emergency Manager and Grand Island Emergency Manager

* Response & Recovery – An Insurance Perspective; Laura Capizzi and Kathleen Clouden of State Farm Insurance

A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided and a raffle drawing of various preparedness items will take place at the conclusion of the conference.
