“Undoubtedly one of the most significant advances in healthcare came about as a result of immunization from disease. This discussion will span from its earliest beginnings of variolation, with sometimes unpredictable outcomes, to tomorrow’s potential advancements thanks to biotechnology. We will focus on the flu, considering the Spanish flu of 1918 that killed an estimated 50 million, to our modern means of detection and prevention of such a re-occurrence.  Yes, it is possible that such a deadly strain can emerge and cause devastating losses worldwide.” – Dr. Gallo
