Many, maybe all, of us have faced classes full of unmotivated students who merely want to the check to box on the curriculum card and don’t really care about their grade. So instead of fighting students to produce “A” quality work, I decided to try something new—contract grading, wherein students choose the grade they want to achieve and complete a corresponding amount of work at the “mastery” level. Meeting the students on their terms and allowing them to decide how hard they wanted to work has proven liberating.
This brown bag discussion will discuss the concept of contract grading and how Dr. Chambers, professor of history, applied it for a section of HIS 199. The results may surprise you, and they are not what he expected.
