Celebrating the Life of George Neimanis

George Neimanis, Niagara University Professor Emeritus of economics, passed away on Oct. 12, 2023, aged 91 years. George was a former chairperson of the economics and commerce department and his employment at NU spanned over 30 years. He retired in 2002, five years after publishing his book, “The Collapse of the Soviet Empire: A View from Riga.”

George was born in Latvia and in the 1990s, he helped the Latvian government make the banking transition from communism to capitalism.

Since his retirement, George resided in Lewiston with his wife, Naomi, who passed away in 2017. George and Naomi had two children: Andrei, who died in 2013, and Mara, who has lived with her father the past five years and was present when he died peacefully at home.

Friends of George are welcome to celebrate his life on Saturday, Nov. 11. A service will be held at Hardison’s Funeral Home in Lewiston at 10:30 a.m., followed by a graveside closing and a noon light lunch open to all friends and family.
