COMMUNITY ALTAR: Oct. 29 – Nov. 5, 2013

In Announcements, by , on October 24th, 2013

The Castellani Art Museum invites the campus community to join us for a week-long celebration in honor of El Día de los Muertos, a Mexican and Mexican-American festival in which participants remember those who have died and entice their souls to visit by building ofrenda, altars decorated with photos of deceased loved ones, dishes of their favorite foods, religious items, pungent marigolds, and candles to help light their way. Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 5, a special community altar built by Leonel Rosario of Medina, NY, will be available in the museum’s sculpture court for you to add your own photographs and memorabilia.

FILM, TALK, FOOD: Friday, Nov. 1, 2013

Leonel Rosario will show footage of Day of the Dead festivities filmed in his hometown in Oaxaca and talk about his experiences in Mexico and western New York at the Castellani Art Museum main gallery from 10 a.m. until noon. Traditional foods provided by his restaurant, Mariachi de Oro Mexican Grill, will be served. All are welcome to attend.

These programs are held in conjunction with the folk arts exhibition (Almost) Too Good to Eat: Marking Life Transitions with Food (July 14 – Dec. 8, 2013) This event is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
