Currents: Arts & Culture Lecture Series with Dr. Amelia Gallagher on Tuesday Evening at the Castellani

Dr. Amelia Gallagher, Associate Professor in NU’s Department of Religious Studies, will discuss the art and controversy of ‘The Black Madonna,’ on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 6–7:30 p.m. at the Castellani Art Museum. Light refreshments will be provided.

The darker skinned “Black Madonna” icons have a long and fascinating history filled with controversy and mystery in both Western and Orthodox Christian art. As a representation of the Virgin Mary, the Black Madonna is a curious iteration created by Europeans in both painting and statuary that has caused an enduring controversy regarding her origin and meaning. Explore the myths and theories of the Black Madonna with this engaging lecture and discussion on religious imagery, race, and iconography.
