Dr. Joseph Little Holding Book Launch Event TONIGHT
Dr. Joseph Little, associate professor of English at Niagara University, is hosting an event March 20 to unveil his new book, Letters from the Other Side of Silence.
The event, which is open to the public, will take place 5-6 p.m. in Dunleavy Hall, Room 127, on NU’s campus.
All author profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the Friendship Village, a residential school and clinic in Hanoi, Vietnam, that serves approximately 120 children and young adults living with disabilities caused by Agent Orange.
Letters from the Other Side of Silence chronicles Dr. Little’s search for a sustainable life after slipping into a mystical state atop a volcano in Guatemala. The journey takes him to Nepal: to a reclusive Russian mystic meditating high in the Himalayas, and to a Nepali mustard farmer who, in living out his final days, embodies a grace and spiritual composure worthy of study.
The journey also takes him through crisis as he develops a relationship with mountains that borders on addiction, and later on an 800-mile winter road trip from Buffalo to St. Louis to have coffee with Belden Lane, a contemplative theologian who helps turn the journey inward to the conceptual metaphors we use to orient ourselves toward the divine.
At the close of the memoir, readers join Dr. Little at the Friendship Village.
In addition to having copies of the book on hand for purchase, the event will also include a mysticism discussion featuring Dr. Little, Dr. Jamie Carr, associate professor of English, Dr. Robert St. Hilaire, associate professor of religious studies, and NU student Zach Pini.
