Drs. Craig Rivera and Timothy Lauger, associate professors in Niagara University’s Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, recently published an article on the associations between religiosity, peer networks, and substance abuse. The study, published in the journal Sociology of Religion, relied on data from the National Study of Youth and Religion, a nationally representative study of adolescents and young adults. The main findings reveal that higher levels of individual religiosity are associated with lower odds of engaging in both marijuana use and binge drinking, and that having a religious peer network enhances the impact of one’s religiosity.
