Frida Berrigan Presentation on Hope and Resistance

In Announcements, by , on April 9th, 2019

The Social Justice Speaker Series continues this Thursday (April 11th from 2-3:30 in Golisano 101) with Hope and Resistance: A Conversation with Frida Berrigan.  Frida Berrigan is a columnist for Waging Nonviolence, a board member of the War Resisters League, and the author of It Runs in the Family: On Being Raised by Radicals and Growing into Rebellious Motherhood. Her parents, Phil Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister, were a former priest and nun who became nationwide icons for their prophetic witness against war and nuclear weapons, which resulted in long jail sentences.

This talk is co-sponsored by the Niagara University Office of Mission and the Department of Political Science; a flyer of the event is attached.

And, coincidentally, there is an excellent story on today’s DemocracyNow titled Kings Bay Plowshares: Peace Activists Face 25 Years for Action at U.S. Nuclear Submarine Base.  The video segment has interviews with four individuals involved in the action.  Frida Berrigan’s mother (age 79), who took part in the action, is not part of the segment because she remains in prison awaiting trial for the nonviolent symbolic disarmament action at the Kings Bay nuclear submarine base in Georgia. The KBP7 acted last year on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The base is homeport for six submarines with more than 100 Trident II D5 nuclear-armed missiles.  The link to this interview can be found here:  https://www.democracynow.org/2019/4/8/kings_bay_plowshares_peace_activists_face.  An article written by Frida Berrigan, titled, 25 Years in Jail for Protecting the Planet?
