Read smarter, not harder: Practical ways to help students read strategically without drowning in grading

Presented by: Youngsoo Choi, Sharon Green, Kathleen McGrath, and Stefanie Wichhart

Does successful learning in your course depend on the students’ effective reading of textbook and/or course material? Have you been frustrated by your students’ lack of class preparation and understanding of course material? If so, we have something very important in common.

Please join us at CASTL (Vini 107)  at 12:20 p.m., Monday, April 13, 2015, where the participants will engage in a lively conversation exploring a ‘snapshot’ of Niagara University Freshmen’s usage and toolbox of reading strategies based on the findings from a study conducted fall 2014 – spring 2015. We will explore implications for instruction across discipline-specific and general education courses. Participants are encouraged (not required) to bring a syllabus and to share ideas for embedding reading strategies into class time without interfering with course content delivery. Highly practical and implementable techniques will be shared, as well as specific ways participants can make them happen in their classes.
