NU Earth Day – April 18th
Come to NU Earth Day on Wednesday April 18th 11 AM to 2 PM Lower Level Gallagher Center. The Eco-Fair will consist of campus and community vendors who will discuss sustainable practices and ways to “be green.”
Enter a drawing to win one of (4) Visa gift cards by visiting vendor tables. Pick up a drawing punch card when you enter, and visit a minimum of 8 vendors to qualify for the drawing.
In addition, Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics will be in Dunleavy Hall, Room 127 at 8:00 PM Wednesday night. Baby kangaroos, snakes, monkeys, alligators, spiders, and more! The best in wildlife education & entertainment! As seen on The Today Show, Saturday Night Live, Nickelodeon’s ICarly, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon! See wildlife up close and personal and learn all about them! This event is co-sponsored by Campus Activities and the Sustainability Committee.
Earth Day is a national holiday to celebrate our home planet. This year’s international theme is to “End Plastic Pollution” bringing awareness to the exponential growth of plastics poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills.
We will be giving away free sugar maple saplings. The sugar maple is our state tree. Trees are valuable for so many reasons. For starters trees create oxygen, they also sequester carbon dioxide, one of the major greenhouse gases. Sugar maples are also a very valuable source of lumber; bowling alleys are made of sugar maple because of their hardness. Oh yes, they are also the trees that are tapped for the production of maple syrup.
So stop by on Wednesday and visit the wild animals, furry creatures, local environmental groups and organizations as well as some eco-friendly businesses.
