Niagara University participated in Pet Sitters International’s “Take Your Dog To Work Day” by hosting a hot dog fundraiser on June 18 for Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue. The university also utilized Twitter to host a pet photo contest to complement the occasion.

Thanks to ample participation from the Niagara University community, the fundraiser netted $425 for Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue, a local organization that offers shelter for abandoned, unwanted and homeless companion animals. The event was staffed by university volunteers and highlighted by the presence of a pair of adoptable dogs. Zehr’s on the Lake also donated a large hanging basket for a raffle – the winner was Dr. Vince Rinaldo, professor of education.

Throughout the week, students, alumni and employees tweeted photos of their pets clad in NU apparel, using the #PurplePet hashtag. The pet that received the most combined retweets and favorites was Ollie, who earned owner (and current student) Jenna Roberts a gift certificate to Blackwinds Pet Supplies in Niagara Falls.
