A Niagara University student group is fundraising for a service trip it plans to make to Nicaragua this December to build a home for a poor family.

Kelly Fitzpatrick, president of Niagara’s Bienvenidos Spanish and Hispanic culture club, said that a group of six students has been organizing the initiative for about a year. They plan to construct a safe, durable home for a family in the small, rural and impoverished Nicaraguan town of El Sauce.

The students will travel to Nicaragua Dec. 16-22 during the university’s winter break. They, along with two NU chaperones, will work in partnership with an organization called the 4 Walls Project, which is a program of Journeys of Solutions. 4 Walls has been providing homes in El Sauce for almost 10 years.

One of the students, junior Briana Neale, participated in the 4 Walls program in Nicaragua while in high school.
