Service Animals & Emotional Support Animals: New Laws, New University Policy
From simple stress management to those living with a disability, the use of Emotional Supports Animals (ESA’s) is on the rise. In fact, under the right circumstances, ESA’s may be considered disability accommodations, with their owners may be allowed to have them in their living space.
Meanwhile, service animals (those animals specially trained to assist people with disabilities) are ALWAYS allowed on campus, without prior authorization.
It is important that the people using these animals find NU welcoming and understanding of their needs. To ensure you are part of that welcoming environment, please review the new “University Policy on Service and Emotional Support Animals.” If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Diane Stoelting or Kelly Engert in disability services, or Chris Hart in human resources.
