Study abroad in the Galápagos: *Last info session tonight at 6 p.m. in Dunleavy 237*
Dr. Esteban Mayorga has designed a trip to the Galapagos archipelago and one of Ecuador’s indigenous communities in the Amazon jungle. The adventure will last two weeks (May 10-24) and includes visits to the wetlands, the flamingo lagoon, the sea lion beach, and the tortoises, as well as a short stay at the indigenous community Jatun Yaku in the jungle, where students will harvest cocoa and help with school maintenance by means of minga—a traditional communal work invented by the Incas.
There will be informal lectures on the ecological challenges of the Amazon rainforest, current environmental concerns of the islands, fair trade with indigenous communities of Ecuador, Kichwa history and culture, Latin American cinema, and travel writing of the Galapagos.
