Volunteers Needed-Book Talk Project

In Other, by , on November 5th, 2019

This fall, this activity will be an assignment in CRL 101, “Critical Literacy.”  I still need twenty-nine volunteers to match with my students.

The goal of this activity is to encourage students to develop a positive attitude toward reading.  What’s involved?  Just 15-20 minutes, at a mutually convenient time, and a desire to encourage a student to enjoy reading by listening to and engaging in a discussion of his or her book.  You only need to be an interested listener; you do not need to have read the book.  If you like to read, you’re invited to tell the student about a book that you’ve read.

The each student will be reading any one of the following books:, Dear Zari by Zarghuna Kargar A long way gone by Ishmael Beah, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Patillo Beals, First They Killed My Father by Luong Ung, Letters from the End of the World by Toyfumi Ogura, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot and Zeitoun by Dave Eggers.

If you’re interested and could be available at some point between November 11th and December 4, please reply as soon as possible with your name, office location, email address and phone extension.  I’ll share your name with a student, who will be asked to contact you immediately to make an appointment.

Students will receive guidelines for the Book Talk Partners Project, and volunteers will receive a copy attached to this email.  Feel free to contact Martha Krupa or call ext 8075 if you have any questions.
