Niagara University’s annual Susan B. Anthony birthday celebration was held Wednesday, Feb. 11, in St. Vincent’s Hall.

Coordinated by the department of women’s studies, the hour-long event commemorated the 195th birthday of Susan B. Anthony, born Feb. 15, 1820. Anthony was a forerunner for women’s rights in America, and helped pave the way for the rights women have today.

One of these reforms is that of higher education – a right that was not available during the better portion of Anthony’s life. According to Dr. Shannon Risk, assistant professor of history, Anthony fought vigorously to make higher education a right for women, a right she lived long enough to see.

The event also awarded two Niagara University students with the Susan B. Anthony Writing Award. The competition – open to underclassmen and upperclassmen – asks students to write a paper on a women’s issue. The competition, started in 2002, takes the spirit of Anthony and applies it to issues women face in other facets of society.
