Film Screening and Discussion: “Spaces of Exception”
The Vincentian Center for Justice and the NU Indigenous Peoples Organization invite you to attend a film screening of “Spaces of Exception” and a discussion with the director, Matt Peterson. The event takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Vincentian Center for Justice, Bailo Hall Room 201.
“Spaces of Exception” investigates and juxtaposes the struggles, communities, and spaces of the American Indian reservation and the Palestinian refugee camp. The film was shot from 2014 to 2017 in Arizona, New Mexico, New York, and South Dakota, as well as in Lebanon and the West Bank. It is an attempt to understand the significance of the land—its memory and divisions—and the conditions for life, community, and sovereignty.
Matt Peterson is an organizer at Woodbine, an experimental space in New York City. He directed the documentary features “Spaces of Exception” (2019) and “Scenes from a Revolt Sustained” (2015), and co-edited the books “In the Name of the People” (2018), “The Mohawk Warrior Society” (2022), and “The Reservoir” (2022). Since 2014, he has collaborated with Malek Rasamny on “The Native and the Refugee,” a multimedia documentary project on American Indian reservations and Palestinian refugee camps.
